Der 1992 verstorbene Cellist, Produzent und Komponist Arthur Russell hat die heutige Musikszene geprägt wie nur wenig andere. Einer der vielen Belege dafür ist die kürzlich erschienene Tribute-Compilation mit Beiträgen von Hot Chip, Sufjan Stevens und vielen mehr. Er war ein echter Erfinder von Musik, ein Outsider und Grenzgänger, dessen Schaffensspektrum zwischen Improvisationsmusik, Avantgarde-Disco und Folk in permanenter Veränderung war. So hat er Anfang der Achtziger mit dem Dancefloor-Klassiker „It’s all over my face“ einerseits den House vorweggenommen, mit dem Album „Word of Echos“ andererseits seine Vision von einer introvertierten sowie befreiten Musik skizziert. Zu Russells wichtigsten Konzertarbeiten gehört „Instrumentals“, das 1974 in New York komponiert wurde und musikalisch der Minimal-Bewegung jener Zeit zugerechnet wird. An der Bad Bonn Kilbi wird das Stück von einem neunköpfiges Ensemble unter der Leitung des langjährigen Russell-Mistreiters Peter Gordon (Love of Life Orchestra) präsentiert. Nebst den weiteren Originalmitgliedern Rhys Chatham, Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers), Peter Zummo (The Lounge Lizards), David Van Tieghem (Steve Reich Ensemble) und Larry Saltzman
(Art & Garfunkel), ergänzen Nik Colk Void (Factory Floor) und Liam O’Maonlai das namhafte Orchester.
Arthur Russell, violoncelliste, producteur et compositeur décédé en 1992, à marqué la scène musicale actuelle comme peu d’autres. Récemment parue, la compilation qui lui rend hommage en est la preuve. Hot Chip et Sufjan Stevens, entre autres, y ont collaboré. Arthur Russell était un vrai découvreur de musiques, un outsider, un testeur de limites, dont le champs des possibles, entre improvisation, disco avant-gardiste et folk, était en perpétuel changement. Ainsi a-t-il, au début des années 80, mis le feu au dancefloor avec It’s all over my face, permettant à la house de faire un bond en avant. De l’autre côté, il esquissait, avec l’album Word of Echoes, sa vision d’une musique libérée mais introvertie. Instrumentals, composé à New York en 1974, est l’une des plus importantes créations de Russell et compte parmi les plus précieuses du mouvement minimal. Au Bad Bonn Kilbi, l’oeuvre sera jouée par un nonet, sous la direction de Peter Gordon (Love of Life Orchestra) son camarade de longue date. Aux côtés des membres originels Rhys Chatham, Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers), Peter Zummo (The Lounge Lizards), Davis Van Tieghem (Steve Reich Ensemble) et Larry Saltzman (Art & Garfunkel), Nick Colk Void (Factory Floor) et Liam O’Maonlai compléteront cette formation de renom.
The cellist, composer and producer Arthur Russell, who died in 1992, has influenced the music scene like nobody else. One of the many examples is the recently released tribute compilation with contributions from Hot Chip, Sufjan Stevens and many more. He was a true inventor of music, an outsider and border-crosser, whose spectrum of work went from improvisational music, avant-garde-disco to folk and was changing permanently. In the beginning of the 80’s he kind of pre-introduced house with the dance floor-classic „It’s all over my face“ and on the other hand outlined his vision of an introverted and free music with the album „Word of Echos“. One of Russell’s most important concert pieces is „Instrumentals“, composed in 1974 in New York and placed in the minimal-movement of that time. At Bad Bonn Kilbi this work will be presented by a 9-piece orchestra, directed by the dear Russell-comrade Peter Gordon (Love of Life Orchestra). Besides other original members like Rhys Chatham, Ernie Brooks (Modern Lovers), Peter Zummo (The Lounge Lizards), David Van Tieghem (Steve Reich Ensemble) and Larry Saltzman (Art & Garfunkel), some new members such as Nik Colk Void (Factory Floor) and Liam O’Maonlai will complete the orchestra.
