Die Karriere des 27-jährigen Studenten Ojay Morgan begann so: Er leitete in New York City eine Catering-Firma und bastelte als Hobby ab und zu ein Musikvideo. So entstand der Song „Ima Read“, reduzierter Hypnose-Hip-Hop, in dem Morgan zu einem einsam stotternden Beat über Bildung und die Ballrooms der Drag-Community rappt. Fashiondesigner Rick Owens setzte den Track für eine seiner Shows in Paris ein. Und Zebra Katz war geboren, der Queer-Rapper mit der Exzentrik einer Grace Jones und einer Vorliebe für psychotische Beatkomplexe.
La carrière d’Ojay Morgan, étudiant de 27 ans, a commencé humblement : il gérait à New York une entreprise de restauration et bricolait à l’occasion des clips musicaux. De ce passe-temps est né le tube « Ima Read », hip-hop brut et hypnotisant, dans lequel Morgan, sur un rythme étonnamment bégayant, rappe à propos de l’éducation et des pistes de danse fréquentées par la communauté drag. Le styliste Rick Owens a utilisé le morceau lors de l’un de ses défilés à Paris. Ainsi vint au monde Zebra Katz, le rapper queer à l’excentricité d’une Grace Jones et au penchant certain pour les cadences psychotiques.
The career of the 27 year old student Ojay Morgan started like this: He was in charge of a catering agency in New York City and every now and then he made a music video. That’s how the song „Ima Read“ emerged, a reduced hypnosis-hip-hop song where Morgan raps about education and the ballrooms of the drag-community over a lonely, stuttering beats. Fashion designer Rick Owens used this track for one of his shows in Paris. And Zebra Katz was born, the Queer-rapper with the eccentric attitude of a Grace Jones and a preference for psychotic beat complexes.
