You would think that studying classical music is much too rigid for a free spirit like Oliver Coates. Nevertheless the English cellist went through with it and graduated with the highest honours. Afterwards he started working with musicians of the most different spectres and aside always has been working on this own project. “Upstepping” is the name of his last album, on which Oliver Coates creates a minimalistic dance music with the help of somehow jarring cello sounds. Elements of deep house techno and ambient arise and disappear and remind of Autechre and Arthur Russell.
