Selvhenter sind eine der zurzeit wohl bemerkenswertesten und wohl am wenigsten einzugrenzenden Bands der experimentellen Musik in Europa. Von der Stilrichtung her sind die fünf Däninnen sowieso nicht einzugrenzen. Jedes um sie errichtetes beschreibendes Wortkonstrukt würden sie in ein paar Takten ihrer Musik niederreissen und jeden schubladisierenden Kommentar in kleinste Teile zerhacken. Wenn man es aber trotzdem versuchen will, die Musik von Selvhenter zu beschreiben, muss man bei der instrumentalen Ausstattung beginnen: Saxophone, Tuba, Geige und 2 Schlagzeuge. Weiteres Merkmal ihrer Musik sind polyrhythmische Grundstrukturen wie man sie aus zeitgenössischen Kompositionen kennt. Diese werden mit traditioneller afrikanischer und asiatischer Perkussion überlegt und mit viel Noise wieder durchbrochen. Die Konzerte von Selvhenter sind ebenso wenig einzugrenzen wie ihre Stilrichtung. Ihre Auftritte sind reine Improvisation, ekstatische Ausflüge an die Grenzen der Sinne.
Selvhenter est actuellement l'un des groupes les plus remarquables et déroutants de la musique expérimentale en Europe. Impossible de limiter le style de ces cinq Danoises: Chaque mot descriptif, elles le démolissent en quelques bars de leur musique, chaque commentaire catégorisant se retrouve haché dans ses plus petites parties. Seul moyen à décrire la musique de Selvhenter, nommer d'abord l'équipement instrumental: saxophone, tuba, violon et deux batteries. L'autre caractéristique de leur musique: des structures de base polyrythmiques comme on les entend dans des compositions contemporaines. On ajoute de la percussion traditionnelle africaine et asiatique, et on givre tout ça avec beaucoup de noise. On définit les concerts de Selvhenter aussi mal que leur style. Les performances s'improvisent et sont des excursions extatiques aux limites des sens.
At the moment, Selvhenter is probably one of the most notable and least containable bands in the field of experimental music in Europe. The five Danish ladies don’t really have a direction of style. Every construct of words one could try to build around them, and every comment that would try to pigeonhole them, they would dismantle within seconds by means of a couple of their beats. However, if one is brave enough to give it a try, it’s advisable to start with the instruments: saxophone, tuba, violin and two drums. Further attributes to their music are poly-rhythmic ground structures as we know them from contemporary compositions. Traditional African and Asian percussion are laid over them and all is broken through with a lot of noise. It’s pure improvisation - an ecstatic excursion to the limits of our senses.
